"Guide to Healthy Fast-Food Eating" (by Hope S. Warshaw) - Most Hopeless and Misleading Book Ever!

This book on Amazon caught my attention as I was searching for general fast food related information online and fast food impact on our life, specially kids. At first glance I thought this would be quite insightful food that will expose the dark side of fast food industry but to my shock and surprise, it turned out to be one that advocates the fast food chains and food sold there.

You cannot expect me to buy such books, but thanks to Amazon Books "LOOK INSIDE!" feature, I was able to scan through some pages of this book that are in public on Amazon website and available for free viewing and that was enough for me to decide what is it all about.

Lets find out more about the book:

The book title: Guide to Healthy Fast-Food Eating (by Hope S. Warshaw)
"Fast-Food" and "Health" doesn't go hand in hand, even a kid knows it (although many would ignore that fact), but I would not object a lot here, may be book is trying to break some myths?! Lets check out further...

Copyright Page: Lets understand who sponsored it, who owns it, some usual yada yada but important in given context.

    • First line reads ".....are generally consistent with....", well any kid in the block would know how the publisher is trying to safeguard themselves upfront. Interesting.... :)
    • Next up, "information contained, do not represent the policy or position of American Diabetes Association (ADA), or any of its bodies or committees", "ADA cannot ensure the safety or efficacy of any product or service described", well well, so why not to call this book "review of fast-food restaurant menus", now this proves the title is nothing but a bait to attract those struck between "what to eat" and "life is on fast track" - do you agree?
    • ...and the obvious clause "assumes no responsibility or liability" - that's fine, alright! :)

Aha! The list of restaurants that I recognize so well! He he 😎

Can I crack a realistic joke -  McDonalds UK in March 2017

A diabetes patient that has just read a new book on how to order healthy food at fast food chains lands at McDonald's : Can I have a whole wheat burger without cheese, can you ensure the bun has no "refined sugar", no "refined salt" and no "bleached wheat flour" please.😃

The server (with that 'who the *uck are you' look): Sorry sir, our buns are world famous buns and no one asks why they have bleached wheat flour", sorry, but let me see if I can get you a bun that has 20% whole wheat 😕

Customer: Thanks dear! Can you also ensure you "deep fry" my burger patty in fresh and cold pressed "vegetable oil" that is not reused.😣

The server (still confused) : Sorry but we always start with fresh "refined" oil in the morning, and we keep adding fresh oil to the deep fryer, so it is fresh you know! It is quite possible that some of the oil residue may have been boiling for several days in same fryer, but how does that matter sire!😈

Acknowledgements: Great team work of course like any other project. But....
Check out the text highlighted in red below, "appreciating willingness of restaurants and food chains" for what? for declaring the nutrition numbers, is that a favor they are extending to consumers in 21st century world? Shall we call them all on world stage and honor them with some awards for "common sense"? It doesn't stop here, it goes one level further....."on behalf of people with diabetes"....."I am indebted" - who gave you this authority dear author!!!  Or may be you mean "on behalf of ADA" what a way to give credit to food-chains for something which is consumer right, and then writing a book for ADA, that doesn't take any responsibility of whats written in the book, you as author feel indebted on behalf of poor patients?! 😱

Diabetic Diet - Truth of Myth - well the page below says a loud that no such diet exists, and that's half right! If someone is diabetic, he/she may have specific needs, so such diet could exist, but mostly, this is all myth and marketing propaganda too to sell those "special diet" programme, but wait....

It goes on to say that "no longer must you ax sugary foods and sweets from you list of acceptable foods" well that's funny, as even if the first statement of "no diabetic diet" is true. No one would recommend anyone (diabetic or not) to eat sugar and sweets. That's globally treated as sweet poison, and doesnt need any certification. Just to sell the idea of fast food (as fast foods contain high sugars, and high carbs that quickly converts into sugar in body anyways, so most of it is "sugars"), seems like is became so important to plant this thought that "sugars and sweets" are good for health.

At the bottom of this page, book mentions a "diabetic diet" under a new name "diabetes eating and care plan" - what a fun this book is :)

This page below lists the ADA key goals around blood sugar levels, e.g. Fasting Glucose, Post Meal Glucose, Blood Pressure, as well as Lipid and others....this is usual medical science way of proving that half of the population in the galaxy is sick and needs to enroll into prescriptive medicine that is sponsored by top pharma houses.

The page below is actually looking good, specially the "first two" bullets under point # 4.
It may sound funny, but anything that's "free" is seldom "good" so watch for this. If you see a "free" in any stuff in market there is a hidden agenda behind that, either to make you buy more that you actually need.....or in cases of "fat-free", "sugar free" sort of free labelled products, it is a marketing gimmick to fool you into believing that it is good for you, so eat it as much as you want. Do you agree?

Help Is Nearby! - of a diabetes 911 - Call a CDE and you are done, may be. I have not experienced this so wont comment on this, I would be happy to hear from you all please.
Last but not the least, here are some of the low rated reviews of this book on Amazon - hope this helps.
